Have you heard about PRP therapy, or platelet rich plasma? This is not some new drug or medical miracle, but rather an innovative new way to heal and speed up recovery from injury. It is becoming a more popular form of treatment, but most notably PRP has been utilized in helping several prominent and star athletes to accelerate and aid in their recovery from injuries – Stephen Curry, Danny Salazar, Tiger Woods, and Kobe Bryant, to name a few. So, what about the weekend athlete? What about the average person that suffers with knee pain?
PRP therapy is used to treat injuries such as:
- Soft tissue injuries like tendonitis
- Joint problems like knee pain from a torn meniscus
- Mild to moderate arthritis
Benefits of PRP therapy:
- PRP injections can possibly aid in post-surgery recovery as well, helping to speed recovery.
- It may also reduce post-operative pain.
- PRP therapy enhances the body’s own natural healing properties and has very minimal risk.
- You may be a good candidate for PRP if you want to postpone or eliminate surgery, or are unable to have surgery due to age or health status.
So, the answer is YES! The weekend athlete or the average person with knee pain CAN utilize the same procedure that pro-athletes have used for successful recovery.
How it works
Platelets are a vitally important component of our blood. The primary duty of these cells is called hemostasis, or blood clotting, that is necessary to stop bleeding and start the healing process. Platelets also contain proteins called growth factors, which have a very important role in the process and effectiveness of PRP therapy. Your own blood is drawn and placed into a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the blood cells, and then a concentrated number of platelets are injected into the injured area. Now you have a fresh and concentrated amount of those healing growth factors right where they are needed the most, which can result in rapid healing and minimal downtime after an injury.
