PRP Treatments in Ft. Lauderdale & Margate, FL
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a revolutionary orthopedic procedure that uses components of the body’s own blood to relieve pain and promote long-lasting healing of musculoskeletal conditions. It can even eliminate the need for surgery and shorten prolonged recovery periods.
At Meli Orthopedic Centers of Excellence, formerly known as Orthopedix MD, we offer PRP therapy for our patients in South Florida.
What is PRP Therapy?
Platelet-rich plasma is a type of regenerative medicine, or something called orthobiologics. It involves the use of substances naturally found in your body to aid healing of orthopedic injuries such as broken bones or damaged muscles, tendons, and other tissues.
Platelets are created by bone marrow and found in the bloodstream. Platelets contain growth factors that have the potential to improve the recruitment of specific cells and substances to the site of an injury. Platelets are what the body sends to an injured area of the body to promote site-specific healing.
PRP therapy uses the platelets found in your blood to deliver a higher concentration of platelets to a specific source of pain or injury. It is used as a “booster” shot to promote healing where you need it most.
The Procedure
PRP therapy is performed in our offices, usually in under an hour. Blood is drawn from a patient, then is placed in a centrifuge, which separates the platelets from the rest of the blood plasma. It is this concentrated level of platelets that is then re-injected at the desired site. A normal blood sample contains approximately 6% platelets, whereas PRP contains as much as 5 to 7 times that amount.
The Benefits of PRP Injections
Platelet-rich plasma aids in the healing process and helps decrease pain and inflammation for conditions such as rotator cuff tears, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, ACL tears, tennis elbow, strains and sprains, and the chronic pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. It is often used as part of a sports injury treatment plan.
About 70% - 80% of patients with joint or muscle injuries report that PRP therapy successfully alleviated their symptoms.
Follow-Up
It may take 4-6 weeks to see the full effects of the PRP therapy.
Depending on your condition, more than a single PRP therapy session may be required to achieve the desired results. PRP therapy is also often used in conjunction with other orthopedic therapies and treatments, including orthobiologics like stem cell therapy. Ask your Meli Orthopedic Centers of Excellence provider if PRP therapy is appropriate for you.
